The centerpiece of this year's Las Vegas GP auction will be a Mercedes-Benz AMG
CLK GTR Coupe and Roadster, which will be offered together for the first time
ever by RM Sotheby's.
The CLK GTR, which is regarded as one of the most daring vehicles ever made in terms of
performance and appearance, comes from a legendary era of endurance racing in
which it faced off against vehicles such as the Porsche 911 GT1 and McLaren F1.
In the end, it emerged as a hero who won a GT1 championship.
To the delight of affluent collectors who view these cars as wise investments, a total of 28 CLK
GTR road cars were constructed in accordance with the homologation regulations
enforced by the FIA to permit manufacturers to enter their cars into racing.
There are only 20 CLK GTR Coupes in existence, and this 1999 model has just 4,658 miles (7,015 km) on the odometer. It is expected to fetch between £6.4 million ($8 million)
and £7.3 million ($9 million) at auction. The Coupe, albeit a more refined
model, yet manages to capture most of the racing derivative's straight-line
speed and deft handling.
The 6.9-liter AMG V12 still produces a powerful 612 horsepower and 568 lb ft of torque, but it
has been tuned to be (relatively) suitable for use on public roads. The maximum
speed is approximately 200 mph (depending on gearing ratios), and it takes only
3.2 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.
Recall that this is a nearly twenty-five-year-old race vehicle with a six-speed manual transmission sending its massive horsepower to the back wheels; that's dread reduced to a
manageable level. When you take into account that its
"decibel-o-meter" test result would humiliate any and all Black
Series cars, things take an even frightening turn. There is a major attitude
problem with the CLK GTR when it comes to sheer presence.
While driving slightly more casually than its hard-top sibling, the Roadster nevertheless
maintains the same level of capability. Due to its 105 miles on the odometer,
this extremely rare CLK GTR Roadster, which is the third of only six ever made,
is expected to fetch between £8.4 million ($10.5 million) and £10.5 million
($13 million) at the pre-auction.
Ahead of the penultimate race of the 2023 Formula 1 season, the two CLK GTRs are on display at Wynn Las Vegas' Awakening Theatre, perched among a group of hypercar royalty
whose combined estimated worth is currently £56.3 million ($70 million). After
that, they'll probably be stored in a temperature-controlled garage.
