Matthew Slater of the Patriots Hit With Rare, Suspect Fine
Matthew Slater, the captain of the New England
Patriots, received two fines this season—did anyone anticipate this?
It's a lie if you said "yes."
Slater seemed to be the last player the NFL would target, despite the league's emphasis this season
on financial sanctions for players. But according to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the
38-year-old's wallet is becoming lighter as he was fined $14,819 for unwarranted
roughness during the Patriots' Week 9 loss to the Washington Commanders.
This play, which occurred at 2:41 in the fourth quarter and can be seen here, did not result in
Slater being called for foul play.Yes, it also seems illogical to us.
After an ugly 34-0 home defeat to the New Orleans Saints in Week 5, Slater was penalized for
virtually the same offense. The initial $14,819 fine for "unnecessary
roughness" likewise resulted in no penalties. The Patriots, who are
currently 2-7 on the year, will next play the Indianapolis Colts, a longtime
foe. On Sunday, the game will take place at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt,
Germany, at 9:30 a.m. ET.
