Comm ministry exports bananas to the Netherlands for the first time.
According to the commerce ministry, the first
experimental cargo of bananas was sent to the Netherlands on Friday.
The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has
partnered with InI Farms for marketing and distribution in Europe and with Del
Monte for logistics. ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture
(CISH), Lucknow, has been enlisted by the APDA to provide technical assistance
for the banana trial shipment.Furthermore, it said that greater prices and more
money for farmers will result from banana shipments to the Netherlands.
India produces more bananas than any other country in the world, but its export share of the
worldwide market is currently only 1%, even though the nation produces 35.36
million metric tons of bananas annually, or 26.45% of the world's total.
India sent $176 million worth of bananas in 2022–2023..
India's bananas are mostly exported to Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Uzbekistan, Saudi
Arabia, Nepal, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Afghanistan, and the Maldives.
It also mentioned the enormous export potential in the US, Russia, Japan, Germany, China, the
Netherlands, the UK, and France.
After Andhra Pradesh, the states that produce the most bananas are Maharashtra, Karnataka,
Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. In 2022–2023, these
five states will account for approximately 67% of India's banana production.
States like Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Chhattisgarh,
Odisha, Mizoram, and Tripura are also known for their banana production.
