Eight former Indian Navy officers received the death penalty in Qatar; MEA claims they are stunned by the decision.
A court in Qatar has declared that eight Indian workers of
the oil-rich nation's Al Dahra enterprise will get the death penalty. The
Ministry of External Affairs has expressed "deep shock" at this news.
They said in a statement that they were in communication with the family
members and were considering their legal options. The government declared that
it will offer the victims "legal and consular assistance.". We are investigating
all legal alternatives while keeping in contact with the family members and the
legal team. We have been attentively monitoring this case and place a great
deal of significance on it. We shall persist in providing comprehensive
consular and legal support.
Which eight men are
they? They were once members of the Indian Navy. From August 2022, they had
been under the custody of the authorities of Qatar. According to Arindam
Bagchi, a spokesman for the ministry of external affairs, they were detained
last on unidentified charges.
Among these eight
guys are decorated officers who have served as captains of significant Indian
warships. Their employer, a private company that trains the nation's armed
forces, is Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services.India was
anticipating a ruling this month. October 3 was the date of the case's seventh
hearing.
These individuals
were received on October 1 by the Indian ambassador to Qatar. The Indian
government has been attempting to bring these soldiers back home.
The eight
individuals have been accused of espionage, according to people familiar with
the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Neither of the
administrations has provided specifics about the accusations made against them.
The following have
been identified: Sailor Ragesh; Commander Amit Nagpal; Commander Purnendu
Tiwari; Commander Sugunakar Pakala; Commander Sanjeev Gupta; Captain Navtej
Singh Gill; Captain Birendra Kumar Verma; and Captain Saurabh Vasisht.They were
held in the Doha jail.
